Centre for Social Innovation joins Startup Canada to recognize leading social enterprises at the Fifth Annual Startup Canada Awards

May 3rd, 2018 The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI), a Toront0-based social enterprise that specializes in the creation of shared workspaces for people and organizations with a social mission, has joined Startup Canada, the national rallying community and voice for Canada’s entrepreneurs, to recognize leading social entrepreneurs at the Fifth Annual Startup Canada Awards. The Awards are the hallmark event celebrating outstanding achievements in Canada’s entrepreneurship and innovation community.

CSI is the title sponsor for the Startup Canada Social Enterprise Award, awarded to social companies exhibiting excellence in their approach to the environment, ethics, community interaction, and corporate social responsibility.

“Over the last five years, the Startup Canada Awards have recognized hundreds of leading entrepreneurs, innovators, and support providers who have worked relentlessly to grow their companies, and invested time to support and champion up-and-coming leaders,” said Victoria Lennox, CEO and Co-Founder of Startup Canada. “We are proud to work with CSI to share the successes of Canada’s social entrepreneurs in 2018.”

“Interest in social entrepreneurship is growing, and that’s great news, because it has to. Just as social and environmental concerns are reaching a frightening crescendo, technological advances, activism 2.0, and market transformations are demonstrating we can do better. The challenges may be daunting, but they offer social entrepreneurs an opportunity to fundamentally reshape our world. As a country and as a global community, we have a responsibility to support social innovation and entrepreneurs.” said Tonya Surman, CEO of Centre for Social Innovation.  “That’s why we’re so proud to sponsor this award.”

Every year, the Startup Canada Awards attract hundreds of nominations; celebrate dozens of entrepreneurs, innovators, and support organizations from coast-to-coast-to-coast; and attract more than 1,500 attendees and 4,000 online viewers at regional and national ceremonies.

Grassroots Regional Awards ceremonies will be hosted by entrepreneur support partners in cities across Canada this Spring. The Awards ceremony schedule is as follows:

Startup Canada will also travel across Northern Canada to celebrate the winners of the Startup Canada Awards in the Territories.

Recipients join the prestigious Startup Canada Awards Alumni Network, a platform to elevate winners’ ongoing impact for Canada and to provide inspiration for the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs.

Among others, past recipients include Anne Whelan, President & CEO of Seafair Capital Inc.; the Right Honourable David Johnston, former Governor General of Canada; the Hadhad Family, founders of Peace by Chocolate; Nicole Verkindt, founder of Offset Market Exchange; Clearbanc; Hootsuite; Patrice Mousseau, founder of Satya Organics Inc.; and, Shawn Smith, founder of Don’t Dis-my-ability Consultation Services Inc.
