“Learn from others, or risk making the same mistakes they did.”

Dr. Sean Wise is an expert on startups and venture capital and uses this expertise in his various roles as a tenured Ryerson University Professor, bestselling author, international business speaker, and partner at Ryerson Futures.

Dr. Wise spent five seasons as an advisor for CBC on the mega hit venture reality show Dragons’ Den before moving in front of the camera as the host of the Naked Entrepreneur, which airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

SN: What is the biggest lesson to date?

SW: Entrepreneurship is no longer an art, it is now a science. So learn from others, or risk making the same mistakes they did.

SN: What advice do you have to those starting up today?

SW: Join your startup community.  Research has shown a correlation between the probability of startup success and the degree of founder engagement with the community.  Participate and prosper.

SN: What is the one thing you think we need to do as a nation, today, to position Canada as a global innovation and entrepreneurial leader?

SW: Teach our children to embrace (not fear) failure.

SN: What is your vision for the next 150 years?

SW: My vision is that Canada continues to lead the world by example and through quiet confidence; that Canada continues to be the greatest nation in the world for quality of life; and, that Canada leads the way to a more equitable, fair and just global society.

SN: What is your message to the world?

SW: Canadian founders punch way above their weight class.

SN: How have you benefited from being a recipient of the Startup Canada Awards?

SW: PR, plus it gave me the opportunity to travel our great country and engage with members of more than 20 Startup Communities.
